An exceptionally rare example of the Moleca lounge chair and ottoman, designed by Sergio Rodrigues in 1963 and produced exclusively that year.

The model represents a pivotal moment in Rodrigues’s practice, combining architectural Brazilian hardwood construction with exposed leather strapping and deeply tufted cushions. The structural frame conveys permanence and clarity of form, while the suspended upholstery reflects Rodrigues’s distinctly Brazilian interpretation of comfort—generous, grounded, and sculptural.

The lounge chair was acquired in its current cream leather upholstery approximately ten years ago. While not original to 1963, the leather remains in very good condition and has developed a soft, natural patina consistent with age. The ottoman was sourced subsequently and newly upholstered to harmonize with the chair. Both pieces present cohesively in tone; the ottoman’s upholstery is more recent, while the chair’s leather shows subtle maturity.

All leather support straps on both the armchair and ottoman have been newly replaced, ensuring structural integrity and long-term stability while preserving the original design intent.

The hardwood frame retains a rich satin finish, highlighting the depth and veining of the Brazilian timber.

With its strictly limited one-year production and commanding sculptural presence, the Moleca stands among the most important seating designs of 1960s Brazilian modernism.
