Description

This compact cabinet is attributed to the Brazilian architect and designer José Zanine Caldas, whose work is distinguished by its structural clarity and reverence for material integrity. The square case volume is elevated on four sharply profiled legs, lending the piece a grounded yet sculptural stance. The planar drawer fronts, animated by the natural movement of the grain, are punctuated by restrained brass pulls—an understated counterpoint to the depth of the wood.

Constructed in naval plywood, the cabinet reflects a pragmatic yet expressive use of material, consistent with Caldas’ exploration of engineered wood and structural honesty. The surface has been revarnished to reveal a warm, saturated tone with a soft, even sheen, allowing the grain pattern to remain the primary visual language. Brass hardware retains a quiet luster, complementing rather than competing with the timber.

Three drawers provide functional storage within a disciplined footprint, permitting use as a bedside table or as a small console in an entry, study, or office environment.

Recently revarnished; in excellent condition, with light, age-appropriate wear consistent with careful stewardship.

A concise architectural object—materially direct, formally assured, and aligned with the spirit of mid-century Brazilian modernism.
