Description

Designed by Sergio Rodrigues in the 1960s, this monumental dining table belongs to the celebrated Beg family, one of the designer's most architecturally sophisticated series developed for collective environments. Conceived during a period when Brazilian Modernism expanded beyond the domestic interior into civic, institutional, and executive settings, the Peg collection reflects Rodrigues' belief that furniture should foster dialogue, collaboration, and shared experience through exceptional craftsmanship and enduring design.

Originally commissioned for the Central Bank of Brazil, the table exemplifies Rodrigues' ability to translate the warmth and richness of Brazilian materials into furniture of monumental architectural presence. Rather than relying on ornament, the design achieves its impact through disciplined proportions, structural clarity, and a masterful balance between mass and visual lightness. Four cylindrical chrome-plated steel legs support the substantial floating top, while the recessed Brazilian rosewood stretcher reinforces the structure without interrupting the table's clean horizontal silhouette.

The expansive tabletop is veneered in Brazilian Rosewood (Jacaranda – Dalbergia nigra), one of the rarest and most celebrated cabinet woods of the twentieth century. Revered for its extraordinary figure and depth of color, the rosewood veneer displays dramatic cathedral flames, sweeping ribbon grain, intricate spider-web figuring, and richly layered movement that transitions from deep chocolate brown and espresso to vibrant reddish-burgundy, amber, and burnt sienna tones. The carefully matched veneer creates a continuous flowing composition across the entire surface, allowing the natural character of the wood to become the table's defining visual element. The satin finish further enhances the remarkable depth and chatoyance of the grain, revealing new tonal variations as light moves across the surface.

One of the table's defining features is its elegant boat-shaped top. Rather than employing a conventional rectangular form, Rodrigues gently curves the long sides outward before tapering them back toward each end, creating a subtle sculptural profile that softens the table's substantial scale. This refined geometry improves circulation around the piece, enhances visual balance, and creates a more intimate dining experience while preserving the commanding presence expected of an executive-scale table.

The newly restored chrome-plated legs introduce a refined industrial contrast to the warmth of the rosewood. Their clean cylindrical forms provide rhythm and precision, while the rosewood foot caps thoughtfully integrate the metal and timber elements into a cohesive architectural composition. Together, these materials exemplify Rodrigues' mastery of combining natural richness with modern engineering.

Measuring 260 cm (102.4 inches) in length, the table comfortably seats eight people, with three chairs along each side and one at each end. Its generous proportions make it equally suitable as a formal dining table or executive conference table, offering ample personal space while maintaining a balanced and conversational layout.

Rarely encountered on the market, institutional commissions from the Peg family represent an important chapter in Sergio Rodrigues' career, demonstrating how Brazilian Modernism could successfully inhabit public and executive spaces without sacrificing the warmth, humanity, and material integrity that define his work. With its exceptional Brazilian rosewood veneer, sculptural boat-shaped top, architectural chrome base, and documented institutional provenance, this table stands as an outstanding example of Brazilian Modern design at its most refined and monumental.
