Description

A distinctive set of eight Brazilian Modern dining chairs, bringing together six original Jean Gillon chairs from the 1960s and two newly crafted chairs made to complement them in caviúna and mohair. The ensemble preserves the visual rhythm of this exceptionally rare design while offering a complete setting for eight. Featured in Brazil’s Casa e Jardim magazine in 1967, the original design combines sculptural elegance with a thoughtful understanding of the seated body.

Each chair rises from slender, tapered legs into gently bowed uprights, connected by a sweeping wooden crossrail. A tall upholstered back panel narrows toward the shoulders and broadens at the lower back, framed by open spaces that give the silhouette its distinctive lightness. Beneath the generously padded seat, shaped wooden rails introduce an additional sculptural gesture. Equally compelling from the front, side, and rear, the design rewards attention from every angle.

The original chairs’ caviúna has aged beautifully, revealing warm amber and honey-brown tones threaded with darker, expressive grain. The two newly crafted companions use the same wood species and mohair upholstery, creating continuity in material and character across the set. Warm gray mohair offers a refined contrast to the wood, its soft, dense pile emphasizing the contours of the seats and backs.

Comfort is central to the design. The substantial, curved backrest and gentle backward sweep provide welcoming support, while the broad, softly crowned seat encourages lingering at the table. These carefully considered forms reflect an anatomical sensitivity matched by the craftsmanship of the exposed wooden structure.

Presented together, the six period originals and two contemporary companions form an elegant dining ensemble that brings the character of Gillon’s 1960s design into everyday use.
