Description
A rare two-piece office set designed by Jorge Zalszupin and produced by L’Atelier in Brazil during the 1960s, comprising a foldable executive desk and a separate rolling file cabinet. Sculptural, functional, and remarkably adaptable, the ensemble exemplifies Zalszupin’s innovative approach to Brazilian rosewood and his ability to unite expressive craftsmanship with practical design.
Both pieces are distinguished by a richly variegated patchwork surface composed of individually selected sections of rosewood in contrasting shades and grain patterns. More than a decorative treatment, this mosaic-like technique allowed smaller remnants from the L’Atelier workshop to be thoughtfully repurposed, transforming leftover material into a dynamic composition. The result is a vivid expression of the natural diversity of Brazilian rosewood, with each fragment contributing its own color, figure, and rhythm to the whole.
The desk is engineered to fold easily in three simple steps, allowing it to be stored or transported in a remarkably compact format. When opened, its broad rectangular top is supported by two substantial panel legs, creating a restrained architectural silhouette. A central reinforcing slat beneath the tabletop provides additional stability while introducing an elegant linear detail. The original L’Atelier seal remains beneath the top, attesting to the desk’s authenticity and period craftsmanship.
The coordinating file cabinet is a fully independent element and may be positioned beneath the desk, alongside it, or used elsewhere as a freestanding accent piece. It contains one upper drawer and one lower filing compartment, each fitted with distinctive leather handles. The cabinet retains its original wheels, which remain in excellent working condition and allow it to move easily. Rosewood veneer finishes all four sides, giving the cabinet a complete sculptural presence from every angle.
Together, the desk and file cabinet form two beautiful and highly functional pieces within one cohesive set. Their flexible configuration, ingenious folding construction, and extraordinary patchwork rosewood surfaces make this ensemble an exceptional example of Brazilian modernist design and Jorge Zalszupin’s resourceful, material-driven vision.
