Description

A rare pair of Brazilian modern armchairs designed by Jean Gillon during the 1960s. Generously proportioned and exceptionally comfortable, each chair is conceived as a softly architectural upholstered volume, with a broad backrest, deep seat, and enveloping arms shaped by continuous curves. Rounded edges on every side soften the substantial silhouette, while precise piping follows the perimeter and emphasizes the design’s tailored construction.

The armchairs are distinguished by sculptural, blade-like rosewood supports that rise along the upholstered body. Their tapered profiles and richly figured grain introduce a strong vertical rhythm while giving the chairs an expressive presence from every angle. This distinctive treatment shares a clear formal vocabulary with Gillon’s celebrated "Rodeio" armchairs and occasional tables, suggesting that this lesser-known model emerged from the same period of design experimentation.

Newly upholstered in warm golden-caramel mohair velvet, the chairs have a compact, softly directional pile with restrained luminosity. The upholstery complements the reddish-brown tones of the Brazilian rosewood and accentuates the gentle curvature of the frames. Loose seat and back cushions balance supportive structure with a relaxed and remarkably inviting sit.

An uncommon Jean Gillon design, the pair brings together noble Brazilian materials, sculptural detailing, generous comfort, and the quietly expressive character of Brazilian mid-century modernism.

One of the armchairs have the manufacture seal within the wood structure as is show in one of the images.
