Description
This elegant pair of “Canoa” armchairs was produced in Brazil during the 1960s by the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, an institution renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and role in shaping mid-century Brazilian design. Crafted in Brazilian Rosewood (Jacarandá) and newly reupholstered in beige leather, the chairs embody a refined balance between sculptural form and functional comfort.
The model’s name, Canoa—Portuguese for canoe—references the distinctive armrests, whose gently curved profiles evoke the silhouette of traditional Amazonian watercraft. This nautical influence lends the design a sense of lightness and movement, while highlighting the virtuosity of the woodwork, particularly in the arms and elegantly tapered legs.
The rosewood displays richly varied grain patterns and warm tonal shifts, a testament to both the quality of the timber and the natural aging of Jacarandá. The leather upholstery has been carefully refreshed, offering a smooth, supple finish that complements the structure without overpowering it. The wood has been professionally refinished, and aside from minimal age-appropriate marks, the pair remains in excellent overall condition.
A refined and timeless example of Brazilian modern seating, these armchairs integrate effortlessly into both period interiors and contemporary settings.
