Description
Produced in Brazil during the mid-20th century, this armchair reflects the expressive yet disciplined language that defines Brazilian modern seating. The design balances sculptural ambition with structural restraint, resulting in a form that is visually distinctive while remaining materially grounded. Widely documented in both period and contemporary publications, the model occupies a recognizable place within the canon of Brazilian modern furniture.
The chair is defined by gently curved arms and a sculpted upholstered back whose silhouette recalls a whale’s tail, creating a sense of movement and lightness. This organic gesture is counterbalanced by four slender, toothpick-style legs that introduce vertical clarity and elevate the composition. The proportions are carefully resolved, allowing the chair to read as both graphic and delicate without sacrificing stability.
Crafted from caviúna hardwood, the frame displays a rich tonal depth and fine grain consistent with the species. The upholstery, executed in a green patterned textile with mid-century character, reinforces the chair’s period identity while complementing its sculptural form. Presented in excellent vintage condition, this armchair stands as a refined and well-documented example of Brazilian modern design, defined by material integrity and formal intelligence.
