Description
A rare and historically cohesive pairing from the iconic Hotel Nacional in São Conrado, Rio de Janeiro, this executive desk and armchair embody the refined architectural language of Brazilian hospitality design at its most sophisticated.
Designed by Jorge Zalszupin for L’Atelier in 1970—within the landmark modernist setting conceived by Oscar Niemeyer—this set was originally placed either in the guest suites or administrative offices of the Hotel Nacional. As such, it represents not only masterful craftsmanship but a direct link to one of Brazil’s most significant cultural and architectural projects of the 20th century.
Executed in richly grained caviúna hardwood, both pieces display the dense warmth and tonal depth characteristic of this prized Brazilian species. The desk retains its heritage plaque and features a balanced composition: an open workspace to the left and a bank of drawers to the right with white Formica fronts and contrasting pulls—an elegant dialogue between material rigor and modern utility. The wood has been professionally refinished, preserving natural patina while enhancing clarity of grain.
The accompanying armchair, sculptural yet disciplined in proportion, is upholstered in a warm oatmeal wool with soft undertones and a tight matte weave. Its architectural arms and generous seat cushion demonstrate Zalszupin’s signature ability to merge comfort with structural precision—luxury expressed through line and material rather than ornament.
Offered together, this set presents a compelling opportunity for collectors to acquire a historically intact interior grouping from a seminal modernist environment. Beyond functionality, the pairing carries decorative authority: the saturated warmth of caviúna against the restrained textile and architectural silhouettes creates a composition that is both commanding and quietly elegant.
An exceptional acquisition for collectors of Brazilian Modern design, hospitality provenance, and museum-level interior coherence. The last images are vintage catalogues from L'Atelier featuring the desk and the armchair.
