Brazilian mid-century furniture, also known as "design brasileiro," refers to the furniture designs created in Brazil during the mid-20th century. These pieces are renowned for their sleek, modernist lines, high-quality materials, and impeccable craftsmanship. However, as with any vintage or antique furniture, proper restoration and maintenance are essential to keep these pieces looking their best.

Restoration Process

The first step in restoring Brazilian mid-century furniture is to assess its condition. Look for signs of wear and tear, such as scratches, dents, or loose joints. If the piece is structurally sound, it may only need a deep cleaning and some minor repairs. However, if the damage is more extensive, you may need to seek professional help.

Professional restoration can be costly, but it is worth the investment for valuable pieces. Look for a reputable furniture restorer with experience in mid-century modern pieces. They will have the knowledge and skills to restore the piece to its original condition.

Cleaning

Cleaning is an essential part of furniture maintenance. Regular dusting and wiping with a soft, dry cloth can help keep the piece looking its best. However, if the piece is particularly dirty, you may need to use a gentle cleaning solution.

Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials on mid-century furniture, as this can damage the finish. Instead, use a damp cloth with warm water. Wring out the cloth as much as possible, if after cleaning the piece is visibly wet, use a dry cloth or paper towel to dry the excess. DO NOT leave water on surfaces.

Polishing and Refinishing

Polishing and refinishing can help restore the shine and luster of Brazilian mid-century furniture. However, it is essential to do this properly to avoid damaging the piece.

Often all a piece may need is to be cleaned following the steps listed above, If this doesn't do the trick you can apply a thin layer of wood wax to return the shine to the piece.

Sometimes these steps aren't enough, in cases where pieces have been scratched or damaged in someway the piece needs to be refinished, when a piece needs to be refinished it is best to seek professional help with refinishing or repairs.

The four main enemies of Vintage furniture are Heat, Direct Sunlight, Dry air, and Dirt.

If you follow these care instructions your vintage furniture will survive for generations.

  • Transport & Moving
    • Furniture should be tightly packed and use transport methods that limit the movement of the pieces.
    • Pieces should be lifted/carried not pushed.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight
    • When pieces are left under direct sunlight for extended periods of time the U.V rays can cause discoloration of finishes, and even cause veneer's to peel.
    • If your piece has a flat surface that is going to be heavily exposed to sunlight we recommend getting a thin piece of tinted/ UV Protected Glass for the tabletop.
  • Avoid Radical Changes in Temperature
    • Pieces should never be place next to heaters or Radiators, this extreme heat can cause wood to expand and crack, Found Collectibles recommendations at least 2 feet away as a rule of thumb.
    • Ideal temperature range 60-85 degrees Fahrenheit(15.5 Celsius - 30 Celsius)
  • Cleaning
    • Always use a dust cloth or microfiber cloth to do an initial cleaning, this should remove most dust and other debris that may be on the surface.
    • Next we recommend using a damp cloth, the moisture should help remove tough dirt and dust without any possibility of harming the finish.

Conclusion

Brazilian mid-century furniture is a valuable and beautiful addition to any home. However, proper restoration and maintenance are essential to keep these pieces looking their best. By following the tips outlined above, you can ensure that your mid-century furniture remains in excellent condition for years to come.
